The Meteorological Services began in the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya in general before 1950. In 1957, the Meteorological Department was established as an official department in charge of meteorological operations. Throughout the first decade of its lifetime, the Meteorological Department used few meteorological stations in its operations. Moreover, its tasks were limited and restricted to issuing some weather reports and forecasts.

In application of the historical leadership’s directives efforts were done and contributions were made to reach a high standard of growth and development with a view to meet service and productive requirements. Special emphasis has been given by the international community to meteorological information and services as an essential requirement for service and productive sectors due to advanced developments the world has witnessed in different fields of life. Accordingly, the Meteorological Department took serious steps in 1998 to enhance its ability to complete the tasks required therefrom until the General People’s Committee issued its Decision No. 79 of 2003 to establish the National Meteorological Centre, one of the most important changes in the lifetime of Meteorological Sector in the Great Jamahiriya.

The National Meteorological Centre made radical changes to develop itself into an advanced centre provided with advanced means and qualified local elements to help support the national economic development.

Those who are concerned with following up the news and activities of the National Meteorological Centre can visit our website that show information, data and general bulletins. They will find easy mechanism to be familiar with and benefit of Meteorological Services in different fields of specialisation such as sea navigation, agricultural meteorology, environment and basic and technological sciences.
